Gena Showalter gives a nice roundhouse kick to her readers feels with her final book in the White Rabbit Chronicles. Before you even open the book. you know from the synopsis that four of Ali’s friends die.

The hits really keep coming in this book. As you near the end, you start to wonder if anyone is going to make it. On the bright side, it forces you to keep reading late in the night, wringing your hands and praying to any deity that will listen that Showalter doesn’t kill off Cole Holland.

If Through the Zombie Glass was all about Ali facing her inner demons (or inner zombie), The Queen of Zombie Hearts is about discovering who she really is. Her past is suspicious to begin with, even in Alice in Zombieland. Showalter supplies much needed answers to some serious questions

This book is a YA Paranormal Romance written by an Adult romance author. So while there’s no graphic sex or anything, there are lots of romance scenes. Lots of making out. Lots of ‘anytime this girl and this guy are in the same room they are all over each other’.

It feels a little ridiculous at times, especially when its like “hey, all my friends just died, lets go make out”. Fortunately, a big bomb sized drama begins between Ali and Cole that isn’t fueled by another girl trying to get between them, but a significant moment in both of their pasts. It’s far more meaningful then as they work through the issue than it was when say, McKenzie was trying to get between them.

Showalter certainly knows how to write her bad-boys with a heart of gold. Cole is somehow infuriating and completely loveable at the same time. Which is an improvement from Through the Zombie Glass when I wanted to punch him repeatedly.

The White Rabbit Chronicles are fun, fast-paced, super romantic and zombie filled. Showalter comes up with a lot of interesting ideas in this series, and offers a cleaner, less gruesome zombie story for all the YA enthusiasts out there.
