Synopsis: When the heroine regains consciousness in an unfamiliar place, she has suddenly lost all memories of everything that happened before August 1. What is this place, and what was she doing there? Who is she, and what sort of life had she lived?
This show was a confused jumble to me, which was really disappointing, since I had seen a lot of comments about how great it is. I was trying to explain it to someone, and I didn’t even know how to put into words what I had just watched. I was that lost. And that’s not a common thing for me.
I was so intrigued by the premise. I watched the first episode and was excited by the prospect of something very different and wholly whimsical. Well, it was certainly different and full of whimsy. Just check out these character designs:
It’s like some weird mix of Alice in Wonderland and a 90’s boy band. I’m all about whimsy, but it was kind of weird because you saw other people who weren’t dressed as crazy, but no one thought it was weird that these guys were wandering around in such…colorful garb. If the entire world was dressed this way, I would have been ok with it, but it just felt really inconsistent.
There’s some weird parallel word jumping that I think was just put in so that we could see the Heroine (she has no name) in a relationship with each of the gentlemen above. This makes it an altogether unromantic show since there is no single love interest that seems to go beyond any of the others. And they are all awkward romances. The only one I was rooting for was Shin, who is the first, and seems to be the deepest relationship.
The other relationships were downright bizarre. And some were horrifying.
The Heroine is really a boring character. She didn’t have a backbone of any kind, and just went along with anything that happened in each new parallel world. Everything happened to her, rather than her doing anything. Something weird would happen and she was always like “oh…ok.”
Any time we got an explanation of why things were happening, I got more confused. And it was always too little too late. I kept waiting for this massively awesome explanation, because the premise and the way the plot was moving kept telling me that there were some really interesting ideas moving this whole thing forward. But alas, I was not impressed with the ending of this show.
The only character that didn’t irritate me was Orion. He’s this adorable little fairy boy that only the Heroine can see. Even there I’m still not entirely sure where exactly he came from or why only the Heroine can see him. It’s all very confusing. But he was more interesting than she was, and I was glad he was a prominent part of the story, even though he was more of an observer.
I still don’t know what’s going on with Mr. Bipolar Green Hair. He shows up randomly all over the place, but you don’t find out anything much about him till late in the season. And even then, I was very disappointed with his story. And still confused.
I’m still confused about everything in this show.
