Reader Recommends is back! Today, we’re sharing our three favorite Young Adult Fantasy series, and three we want to read. If you want to join in the fun, there’s a link-up at the bottom of this post.
Today’s Topic:
Young Adult Fantasy
You know the type. Usually there’s a map that looks rather unfamiliar at the front of the book. Doesn’t take place in our world. Magic is involved. Probably some magical creatures. There’s certainly no shortage of this genre in Young Adult, and there have been some EXCELLENT fantasy releases in the past few years. Check out some of my favorites below, and then link up to share yours!
A girl with magical skill that she doesn’t understand dresses as a boy to try to become the Royal Tailor for a strangely irresistible Emperor, and falls in love with a shady magician along the way. Project Runway-esque trials ensue, as well as a dangerous journey that they may not come back from. That’s a terrible description but it’s easily my favorite read of this year.
2. The Elemental Trilogy by Sherry Thomas
I have ALWAYS loved this series, since the first time I read it years ago. It’s a charming mix of fun shenanigans, adorable romance, and intense battles. It always reminded me of the early Harry Potter books in the tone/execution. Absolutely worth your time. Writing this is making me want to re-read them!
Uprooted is one of my favorite Fantasy books EVER. Dang is it a gem. Girl gets taken to live in a tower with a grumpy magician so that grumpy magician will continue to protect their village from the mysterious Wood nearby (he requires a new girl every ten years). The girls always come home unscathed, but different somehow. Our heroine, Agnieszka, is no exception.

An excellent list! I certainly second your recommendation regarding Strange the Dreamer and Uprooted, both of which are outstanding… My suggestion would be The many Selves of Katherine North, which also has a strong sci fi element, but the writing is just gorgeous. And I am going to look out the Sherry Thomas series as it looks right up my strett…
