The Collectors’ Society Review (The Collectors’ Society #1) | The Hidden Library Review (The Collectors’ Society #2)
Today we are celebrating the newest release in The Collectors’ Society series by Heather Lyons, The Forgotten Mountain! This is one of my very favorite Fantasy series, and it just gets better and better with each book!
Alice is a heroine you can truly get behind. She’s strong, smart, a capable fighter, supremely likable all around. And we get to see a slightly different side of her in The Forgotten Mountain. Due to Finn’s…disappearance…Alice is on a warpath. A serious one. She’s in a “help me or get out of my way” kind of mood for the first bit, and it’s magnificent. As a Queen of Wonderland, she’s always got a regal air to her, but she’s also willing to get her hands dirty to accomplish her goals. And getting her hands dirty is extremely necessary in this installment; there are oodles of action scenes here, with our heroes fighting for their lives and the safety of all worlds.
Finn remains as adorable, sweet, caring, and capable as ever. I loved getting to know more of his backstory in the second book, The Hidden Library, and he only continued to grow in my esteem in The Forgotten Mountain. His and Alice’s relationship is a very important facet of The Forgotten Mountain; Grimm’s Fairy Tales are the setting for much of this book, and what is more important in fairy tales than true love? Heather Lyons writes a love that positively shimmers off the page, making the reader believe it truly can conquer all. And from the ending that Lyons gives us in The Forgotten Mountain, Finn and Alice will need all the magic and power their love gives them.
As I just mentioned, Grimm’s Fairy Tales finally make an appearance in this series. The tone of The Collectors’ Society is already dark, whimsical, and mysterious, so what better story to add to the mix than Grimm’s Fairy Tales? I loved this addition, and I hope we get to see even more in the next installment.
You know what else I would love to see more of in the next book? The A.D., otherwise known as The Artful Dodger. I’ve unwittingly developed a soft spot for him, despite his sometimes lurid and crude behavior. He certainly proves himself in The Forgotten Mountain, showing that he’s an invaluable member of the team. Grymsdyke, Alice’s arachnid assassin joins the team full time, lending his hilarious observations and deadly services to the Society. Victor and Mary are back as well, of course, continuing their adorable sometimes fighting, most of the time madly in love relationship that’s quite entertaining to follow. All of Lyons’ heroes are exceptionally likable, and they are all quite different in personality, keeping all their scenes completely and thoroughly engaging.
On the flip side, her villains are vile and despicable, though clever and fascinating to get to know. I’m itching to see more of the mysterious Gabe Lygari (I loved what we did learn about him; seriously brilliant Heather!) and how far his power reaches is quite a troubling subject.
The ending, I will warn you, is a cliffhanger of a terrible sort. Brilliant, and completely unexpected. I can’t wait to see how Alice and Finn get out of this monumental mess.
Content Warning: Sex (graphic), Language, Violence. Recommended for 18+
Conclusion: 5 Stars – Run to the nearest bookstore right now and buy this book. You owe it to yourself.

Excerpt:
The van door behind us slides shut. A click signals Marianne’s adherence to my wishes, and then we three descend upon the front door, the crunch of dead leaves and twigs beneath our feet cutting through the uneasy silence the gloom sunrise has brought. In a surprising show of gentlemanly manners, the A.D. moves to open the door. When the handle does not depress, a half smile curves his lips. “It’s locked. But no worries. I can have it picked open in no time.”
“There is no need.”
Darkish-blonde brows scrunch together. “But—”
“Stand to the side, please.”
When he fails to move at my thinly veiled order, Mary not so gently yanks our companion away.
The door before us is thick. The handle is ornate. It is a beautiful door, no doubt chosen specifically to adorn a building as fine as Bücherei. It takes me three strong, measured swings of my war hammer against the handle and its surrounding area to break it apart and permanently scar its beauty. Picking a lock is kind, respectful even. A picked lock can be relocked. I do not wish this door to close behind me. I do not wish to be respectful of Bücherei.
The time for genteel manners is gone.
The A.D. is in danger of catching flies with his mouth as he ogles the door’s remnants. For someone who professes to be so clever, he certainly underestimates ladies far too often.
Stale darkness, oppressive and opaque all at once, looms before us. I am unafraid, though. I am not even taken aback. I believe in the impossible, after all. I have seen, lived the impossible.
I step past the wreckage into the house.
