TBR Commentary: Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

This month our To-Be-Read assignment from The Misadventures of a Super Librarian was:

More Than One (An author who has more than one book in your TBR pile)

So this month, I am reading Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo, the third book in the Grisha Trilogy! The other book on my to-read list by Ms. Bardugo is Six of Crows (which I know technically may not count since it doesn’t come out till later this year, but oh well). I’m about half way done with Ruin and Rising so this isn’t a review, just a short discussion.

Ruin and Rising

While I feel like there is a lot going on the world of this book, the plot so far has been very pointed, following Alina and Mal as they struggle in the grip of the Apparat (can we just kill him, please?). There’s lots of action, lots of romantic tension, lots of “what are we willing to sacrifice to bring down the Darkling”….some good scenes between Alina and the Darkling.

Can I just say that I am Team Nikolai? Any other Team Sturmhond’s out there? Cause, yes please. We don’t need Mal. Or the Darkling.

I’m enjoying seeing Alina grow in her magic summoning powers. That’s been an interesting journey to watch; its also interesting to see how she struggles with what she is capable of and how far she is willing to go to accomplish their goals.

Has anyone else read and loved this series?
