Top 10 Books for Readers Who Like Awesome Heroines

This week’s Top Ten Tuesdays Post is very similar to my new feature, Reader Recommends! (which you should totally check out and join because it’s super fun!) Sometimes, especially in YA, awesome heroines are tough to find. These are some of my favorites!

*Note* I saw that last week was “Favorite Heroines” AFTER I wrote this post.

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead – Sydney Sage is like Superwoman. She has to keep a bunch of teenage vampires out of trouble, plus keep the Alchemists in the dark about her more friendly vamp tendencies, plus keep Jill Dragomir safe. It’s a full time job. And she’s re-doing high school as her cover. Oh, and she has to learn how to control magic as well.

Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton – Ellie isn’t your average high schooler (surprise surprise). She’s actually this super powered angel that has to fight the creepy crawleys that go bump in the night, aided by another swoon worthy angel.

Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout  — Alex doesn’t start out awesome, but she certainly grows into an awesome character through many trials and fires. This is a great series, influenced by Greek Mythology, with tons of action, and lots of romance.

Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost – Moving into some Urban Fantasy here; The Night Huntress series follows Cat, half vampire, as she goes around staking every vamp she can get her hands on (excluding Bones, of course). This is one of the best UF out there, with plenty of mystery, vamp karate action, and lots of steamy romance.

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill – I just got hooked on the Chicagoland Vampires, and I love Merit! She’s sassy, wields a Katana, and doesn’t let people walk all over her. She’s a baby vampire, yet she is the solution to many of her sire’s problems (the gorgeous and infuriating Ethan). Tons of fun, lots of great paranormal elements, and plenty of romantic tension.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead – probably one of the series that really started it all for me (at least for YA paranormal romance), I devoured Vampire Academy. Rose and Dimitri’s story is just SO EPIC.  For anyone looking for a vampire series, this is the one I would recommend, hands down. Make sure you follow it immediately with Bloodlines.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers – can you say ASSASSIN NUNS? This series is so fascinating; it’s a mix of political intrigue, spiritual discovery, and romance. This is great for fans of historical fiction who want a little paranormal in the mix.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder – Our main girl, Yelena, has one of the darkest pasts of any YA book I’ve read recently. Yet she trudges on, learning to become the king’s food tester, being groomed by the mysterious Valek to detect any poison that might make it into the palace food. Another great story of self-discovery, letting go of your past, growing into your future. Plus some awesome fantasy action.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – This is probably the best YA Fantasy series out there right now. Calaena has been groomed from a young age to be an assassin. When a prince drags her out of her punishment in what can only be called a death mine, she becomes the king’s pawn. But there’s so much more to Calaena than anyone could even guess. A brilliant and massive story filled with magic, politics, romance, action, and lots of death.

Poison Princess by Kresley Cole – This series is extremely unique. Evie starts out as a typical high school girl, but when an apocalyptic even happens, she discovers she is something much more powerful. The first book is a mix of High School Contemporary Romance and then suddenly Post-Apocalyptic. Things get super interesting in the second (and EXTREMELY dark).

What books with awesome heroines do you love?
