What a year for reading 2016 has been!! Aside from a plethora of sequels and conclusions to awesome series, I read so many books by authors new to me! Here are some of the highlights:
Uprooted was probably my favorite new author read of the year. It’s also easily on my top 10 reads of 2016. A really wonderful standalone that I am tempted to read again (which I don’t really do!)
2. Anne Aguirre – Sirantha Jax
A really awesome sci-fi space adventure with some romance thrown in. I adore Sirantha Jax, especially in Grimspace.
3. V.E. Schwab – A Darker Shade of Magic
This was such a creative and fascinating book! I really enjoyed the world building, and I’m definitely interested in continuing the series. I’d been meaning to read something of Victoria Schwab’s for a few years now, and I’m glad I started with A Darker Shade of Magic!
4. Julia Quinn – The Duke and I
I’d heard that Julia Quinn was sort of the quintessential Historical Romance author, and let me tell you, she does not disappoint! Loved The Duke and I and can’t wait to see what other shenanigans the other Bridgerton siblings get into!
5. Jessica Khoury – The Forbidden Wish
Who doesn’t want a richly atmospheric and romantic retelling of Aladdin but with a feisty and strong female jinni as the main character? Loved this one!
6. Brittany Cavallaro – A Study in Charlotte
A Study in Charlotte is probably also on my top ten reads for 2016; I loved this quirky Sherlock Holmes retelling!
7. Alwyn Hamilton – Rebel of the Sands
This mash up of fantasy and western in a desert setting was AMAZING. I loved how fast paced and cinematic and creative it was!
8. Virginia Boecker – Witch Hunter
Dark and magical with a romance I could really cheer for. A good and interesting historical/fantasy.
9. Jana Oliver – The Demon Trapper’s Daughter
Sassy main character, cool post-apocalyptic-ish world building, BECK. Need I say more?
10. Jennifer Donnelly – These Shallow Graves
An eerie historical mystery with a strong heroine and an absolutely adorable slow building romance? YES PLEASE.
What are your favorite new to you authors from 2016?
This is a cracking list! I’d endorse the 3 of your choices that I know – Novik, Schwarb and Aguirre, while also aware there are a couple more I’m seriously interested in reading – Khoury and Oliver. I’d also agree that 2016 has been an awesome reading year.

I read A Study in Charlotte this year as well. Seeing as I love Sherlock, I enjoyed the retelling and the gender flip as well. Was brilliant! And I love Julia Quinn’s Mr Cavendish, I presume. You should definitely read that one 😀
