Whatever Wednesday: Sailor Moon Crystal

I’m the queen of finding a weekly meme, committing to it, then dropping it after about two weeks. So we’ll see how long this lasts. I’m calling it Whatever Wednesday, because it’s more of a chance for me to just ramble about something in my life for anyone who cares to listen. No specific rules, categories…just me…rambling about random stuff.

Anyway, for those of you who may not be aware, a reboot of the classic Anime Sailor Moon is under way in Japan, titled Sailor Moon Crystal. The first episode aired on July 5th, and as far as I can tell, a new episode will air every two weeks.

There was a lot of drama leading up to the airing. The show premier was postponed multiple times over about a year and a half, finally airing two weeks ago. While technically a reboot, Crystal will follow the Manga written by Naoko Takeuchi much more closely than the original show did. This includes art direction, which, after watching the first episode, I have deemed much prettier and polished than the original show. It also looks much more like the manga, especially the character designs. The dialogue seems less geared towards children, as the original show did, and included a few cuss words, although nothing that would deter a slightly older viewing audience.

I was a huge fan of Sailor Moon when I was growing up. When I heard they were doing a reboot, I practically threw a party. It was such fun to watch the new episode, with it’s updated animation, richer colors, and slightly more mature style. I’m excited to see how it progresses.
