Synopsis:

End of Days is the explosive conclusion to Susan Ee’s bestselling Penryn & the End of Days trilogy.

After a daring escape from the angels, Penryn and Raffe are on the run. They’re both desperate to find a doctor who can reverse the twisted changes inflicted by the angels on Raffe and Penryn’s sister. As they set off in search of answers, a startling revelation about Raffe’s past unleashes dark forces that threaten them all.

When the angels release an apocalyptic nightmare onto humans, both sides are set on a path toward war. As unlikely alliances form and strategies shift, who will emerge victorious? Forced to pick sides in the fight for control of the earthly realm, Raffe and Penryn must choose: Their own kind, or each other?

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days #1) Review | World After (Penryn & the End of Days #2) Review

This is one of the more intense YA series out there. There’s lots of nightmarish events, creatures, conflicts, settings…lots of hellscapes that you just don’t think Penryn and Raffe aren’t going to make it out of.

I feel like this series takes place over like, three weeks. altogether. It’s insanely tense and quick and you just fly through the pages because Penryn is always running or fighting from something trying to kill her in some terribly gruesome way. Or she’s worried her little sister Paige is going to eat her face off because she’s some horrifying science experiment. If she’s lucky she’ll just get skewered by an angel and be on her merry way to the afterlife.

End of Days had a lot of romantic angst, more so I thought than the first two. Penryn and Raffe have a delicious relationship because they came together out of necessity and their relationship reluctantly grew out of that. Very reluctantly. I like that we saw a more vulnerable side of Penryn in End of Days, where she was fighting with her feelings for Raffe. It’s an impossible relationship. I didn’t think it was going to end up like it. Though I’m thrilled with the ending. It was traumatic and frustrating and very romantic in a horribly screwed up way. Which fits the world they live in.

The Angels are still out for blood, and Uriel is upping his game. We get angel-made world’s end monsters, pestilence, even the dead coming back to life. It’s a bona fide apocalypse. It’s truly a miracle that Penryn survives. This series is just one hit after another, and it has no qualms about kicking you while you’re down.

As a hopeless romantic, I loved the ending, though I can completely see why people say it doesn’t quite fit the tone of the rest of the series. But if we had that sort of ending, everyone except Uriel would have died, and no one really wants that, right?

I really love this series. It’s incredibly dark, intense, action-packed, keeps you on the edge of your seat, and hopelessly romantic. I don’t recommend for younger YA readers, but it’s the best angel-series out there.

Ooo… I have a weakness for Angel series and enjoyed the first book – would you say the whole series compares favourably with Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series? I really enjoyed the review – many thanks for sharing.

Its very different from Daughter of Smoke and Bone (I adore both series!) in the sense that Angelfall is much more apocalyptic/sci-fi ish whereas Daughter of Smoke and Bone felt very fantasy to me. Both are excellent though!
