Trailer:

Disclaimer: I saw this movie in theaters when it came out. This review was written over a year later after watching it a few more times.

I was nervous about this one.

The trailer didn’t look AWFUL but it didn’t quite look awe-inspiring. But I had really liked the book, so I was going anyway. Plus, I always try to support anything connected with the YA Literature community.

But look at that cast…Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, and Viola Davis? At least they’ll be awesome!

And then the movie starts…and I forgot that everyone in the South has a Southern accent.

But that’s ok! I can get over it! At least this guy playing Ethan seems to be a pretty good actor.

Anyway…woah, hold it, why did he already find the locket? Doesn’t that come later in the story? I mean, I may be remembering that wrong, but I feel like it wasn’t in the first chapter of the book.

So we’re trekking along…as suspected Viola Davis is awesome at everything…oh hey, that guy playing Link is kinda cute…wasn’t he in It’s Kind of a Funny Story?

Aww Zoey Deutch; she was so awesome in Vampire Academy! Now I want to watch Vampire Academy. Dang it.

Alright Jessica, focus. Here comes Lena. Well…she isn’t nearly as freaky as she was described in the book. She looks pretty normal to me…

Was I the only one super disappointed that her charm necklace wasn’t more…charmy? Anyway, I can get over Lena not being super freaky, that’s fine. Woah, we’re moving along really fast now, aren’t we? It’s ok, movies move at different speeds than books, Jessica, it’s fine, just go with it. Oh look Jeremy Irons! Love him!

And then..wow…we’re already to the kissing portion of this relationship…that was fast…wasn’t this book really long? I feel like things developed a lot slower…

At least they have good chemistry. Aaaaaaaaannnnndddddd here comes Emmy Rossum. Trouble Trouble Trouble. Alright, this family dinner thing is kind of silly. Hey look! Her cousin is Beaver from Veronica Mars! What a jerk. Hated him so much. Anyway, keep focusing Jessica. There’s lots of stuff happening with the locket ok…and wow…Emma Thompson’s creepy. Good. That’s very good. Not that anyone’s surprised.

Oh look, more kissing.

What happened to the telepathy stuff? I thought that was a cool thing in the book…but on second thought, it might look dumb in a movie, so maybe that was a good decision.

Too bad Ridley’s crazy and evil, her and Link would be cute. Except she looks quite a bit older than him, so that would be weird…

More kissing….oh look! How convenient, a secret underground Caster library!

I think it’s kind of funny that people do Civil War re-enactments. I mean, to each his own, and I think it could be fun to participate…but it’s also kinda weird, you know? Anyway, we’re totally getting close to the end here. Don’t really remember how this ends.

Oh yeah…that’s how.
