Kpop Corner: Best Songs of 2019…part 4

Woohoo! We made it to the top 5 songs! I hope everyone had a beautiful Christmas yesterday, and that you ate delicious food, spent time with people you loved, and enjoyed spreading good tidings of great joy.

And what better way to celebrate than to listen to kpop?

Just kidding.

#5 : Superhuman by NCT 127

I hadn’t paid NCT much attention before now; of course, you can’t help but be blown away by the choreography in Cherry Bomb and The Seventh Sense, but musically I’ve never loved their stuff. Then they struck literal gold with “Superhuman” (Highway to Heaven is also FANTASTIC, and they sang it on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I cried). Musically it’s awesome AND the choreography is on fire! I adore this song. Can’t wait to see more from all the NCT units!

#4 : Eclipse by Got7

Can we first of all acknowledge how beautiful Youngjae sounds on this song? I mean, they all kill it, but I love how well the chorus sits in Youngjae’s voice. Anyway, Got7 has had an awesome year, with Eclipse and You Calling My Name as their title tracks. Their concert this summer was a blast, and I know they had a ton of stops all over the world. I can’t wait to see more from them in the next year!

#3 : Blue Flame by Astro

Astro is one of my all time favorite groups. Definitely top 3. You’ll see my #1 song is also an Astro song. I wasn’t sure they were going to be able to deliver at the level of “All Night” so soon again, but I never should have doubted them. Blue Flame is a masterpiece, and I’m so in love with the way they’re maturing as a group. I do occasionally miss their boyish energy from when they debuted with Hide and Seek and songs like Breathless and Baby, but this more mature side of them is incredible. Keep it up, Astro! Get better soon Moonbin! I was so sad you couldn’t promote with the rest of the group this time, but we look forward to seeing you happy and healthy again.

#2 : Hit by Seventeen

This may be the most insane choreography ever danced in a kpop song. When this song came out I was absolutely blown away. I remember Joshua saying in an interview that because of “Hit” their stamina has increased a lot. This song is a sprint from beginning to end, and their energy is palpable on every stage they perform. Also, I feel like I should say I thought “Fear” was also great, but when you produce as many incredible songs as Woozi and Seventeen do, it’s hard to choose your favorites (especially when you’re limiting yourself to just two per group).

#1: All Night by Astro

Here it is. My number 1 song of the year. This song came out back in January, and even then, I said “Wow, this is definitely going to be my favorite song of the year”. This whole album is brilliant. I wanted to put ‘Moonwalk’ and ‘Bloom’ on this list too, but I was limiting myself to two per artist. This song is also special because it got Astro their first win. Honestly, Astro was so underrated for so long. They were performing just as well, if not better than many of the top groups for a few years, and All Night felt like their coronation, their arrival into the big leagues. I honestly thought “Crazy, Sexy, Cool” last year was going to be the one, but this one blows CSC away. They are all growing up so well and improving in their art. YOU GUYS, WE CAN’T CALL SANHA A BABY ANYMORE DID YOU SEE HIM IN BLUE FLAME.

But also, if Jo Jinho is my bias, Moonbin is 100% by bias wrecker. But that’s another post for another day.

I hope you enjoyed my favorite songs of 2019! Let me know what your favorite songs were in the comments! I’m always looking for song recommendations (in any language).
