No one was more surprised than me when I discovered I actually really liked a lot of Shrek the Musical. I sort of hate the movies, but there’s some AWESOME music in the musical, and it’s actually quite a bit less crass than the movie.
Brian D’Arcy James (a well known name on Broadway) plays the title character with warmth and hope and this song is shows his vocal prowess. It’s currently one of my favorite male broadway solos. This song takes place just after Shrek and Donkey rescue Fiona from her dragon-guarded tower. Shrek tells Donkey what he would have his life be like if he wasn’t an ogre.
