Top Ten Movies for When You Want to Laugh and Cry

We have a movie freebie this week on Top Ten Tuesdays, so I’m sharing my five favorite movies that make me cry, and my five favorite movies that make me laugh! I’m not always in the mood for a good cry fest, but when I am, I turn to these movies for assistance! I generally chose melancholic movies that don’t necessarily have bad endings (because I’m not a fan of those), but will give you that sad, weepy feeling! For the funny ones, I’m not usually a fan of the “comedy” genre, so these may not be a little outside of what you were imagining for movies to make you laugh, but they do the trick every time.

Movies that make me cry:

1. Memoirs of a Geisha

I love this movie; funny enough, it made me extremely uncomfortable the first time I saw it (I was 15 and it was a little mature for me at the time), but now I definitely count it as one of my very favorite movies. The costuming, cinematography and acting is all gorgeous and wonderfully done, and the story, while it has a mostly satisfying ending, is extremely sad and melancholy the whole way through.

2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I was OBSESSED with this movie when it came out. I really need to watch it again. Logan Lerman’s performance will make you cry every time. Such a great movie about being young and discovering who you are and learning how to deal with life.

3. Saving Mr. Banks

So, this probably has something to do with the fact that I have pledged my heart to Disney, but I very clearly remember UGLY crying in the theater during this movie. That scene where Emma Thompson is sitting in the theater watching the debut of Mary Poppins and remembering her father? SLAY ME.

4. A Walk to Remember

I was in the perfect target audience when this movie came out and I ate it up. I loved it so much. I think I need to host a throwback movie night to relive this movie and all its feels.

5. Shakespeare in Love

Funny enough, Shakespeare in Love is billed as a comedy (and it certainly is very funny most of the way through) but the ending is HEARTBREAKING. Ugh. It gets me every time.

Movies that make me laugh:

1. O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Aside from the fact that the soundtrack to this movie is literally one of the best cd’s ever made, this movie is hysterical and super clever (Gotta love those Coen bros. Check out Hail, Caeser! as well-another funny one!) Not to mention it is oh so quotable.

2. Grand Budapest Hotel

Ahhhh yes here’s a really really really weird movie that will keep you laughing from start to finish. Grand Budapest Hotel makes ridiculous pronouncements and then expects you to go along for the ride with little to no explanations. And it’s hilarious. (Also check out Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. Probably somehow weirder than GBH but still very funny).

3. Shaun of the Dead

Just the fact that the tagline is “A Romantic Comedy. With Zombies” should tell you everything you need to know about this movie. It’s hilarious. And surprisingly romantic.

4. Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest is especially great for anyone who really enjoys Sci-Fi and doesn’t take themselves too seriously. Great performances, and a hysterical script that challenges Sci-Fi cliches head on, but honors the genre as well.

5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

You knew this one was coming. Can you have a list of movies that make you laugh without Holy Grail on it? This is probably the most ridiculous, most hysterical movie I’ve ever seen. It’s brilliant.

What are your go-to Laugh/Cry movies?

I absolutely LOVE dramatic movies, even though I’m a hard stone and I hardly ever cry with them. I’ve watched and enjoyed A Walk to Remember and Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I couldn’t cry with any! I don’t know why, hahah.
A movie that did make me cry, though, was The Blind Side, with Sandra Bullock. I really like her work and I find all her movies very beautiful and emotional.

I haven’t seen The Blind Side (I don’t run to see sports movies usually, although Remember the Titans is ALWAYS a good watch), but I’ve heard great and similar things about it. Sandra’s a rockstar. Great actress.

This is a great list. I recently watched Saving Mr Banks with Himself to cheer myself up (having NOT paid attention to the trailers). You’re right about that scene in the cinema… Thank you – there’s several on here that I don’t know and want to check out.
